Civilization 4: Colonization

Flop

Where'd That 6th Toe Come From?
I picked it up the other day and have been playing for a while now. My initial impressions were pretty good, but it definitely has some flaws. The biggest flaw, which virtually makes it unplayable (for me at least) comes near the end, when you declare indepence. Throughout the game the king will add troops to his expeditionary corps, like in the first game, but apparantly at a much greater rate. I was facing an army more than 10 times the size of my own (he sent about 700 units, all better than mine) and had to give up.

I hope they fix this, because apart from that it seems like a pretty good remake. They've changed some of the concepts, but they've still stuck reasonably close to the original, and I was having a great time untill the royal expeditionary force arrived and destroyed my fledgling nation.

Has anyone else been playing this? What did you think?

Thanks for the link. I think I'll wait for a patch, though, since I don't have a lot of time for playing at the moment, and also there are a few other issues I hope will be cleared up with a patch.

I'm amazed to see the high scores it's gotten, though. Only a few of the reviews I've read even mentions how unbalanced the game is. From reading the same forum you linked to, it seems that at the moment the only viable method of winning the game (at any difficulty level), is gamey at best.

Yep, although you could argue that it's intentional and the game is supposed to be a challenge. But figuring out that you need to keep the Liberty Bell production very low throughout the game to not get an insane force at your doorstep is pretty weird.

I can't remember if I've ever played any of the other Civ games, but I tried Civ 3 and found it was too difficult. Well I'm not sure what I was doing wrong but the enemy computer player would always out-tech me while also pushing against my defenses.

So I would be like, "Cool I finally got musketeers researched. Now my defenses will hold!" and then they'd send their horde of musketeer riders.. or something like that.

Maybe they should rename the series to Warmongering? x]

Starting this game in a couple of days - any big changes to the original that have not been noted here I should be aware of?

Luv the CIV series... I've been playing it since Civ 1 was on the floppy disks! Hours of my life wasted away.... sigh*

One thing I've heard - you always make land in the same place.

Also, I haven't heard anything about whether the Spring faction is included or not. It was fun to play them now and again.

I have been playing the original for a couple of weeks to prepare for this game, and after having played it 3 nights I have to say I feel like playing the original again ...

I'll edit this post later for details and specific likes/dislikes.

I'd like to hear some opinions on this new title. The original Colonization is one of my favorite games, and I'm skeptical it's greatness can be replicated.

The problems about this game can be explained quickly by watching a couple of zero punctuation and slapping the game back to e-bay. Seriously this new stand-alone "MOD" sucks. As hard as a 10grand whore sucks a golf baoll trough the garden hose....

/sigh....

Ok back to bare bones of the game. First off the start you meet the first problem:
Your starting location is fixed. Unless you mod the MOD you always start near south pole.
The king's army is very imbalanced. They get about +100% vs settlements so you are going to loose your port no matter what. However they dont get "ANY" +def in cities so your soldiers can slaughter them in the city after they finish their moves.
The more you pump Liberty Bells the more unbalanced King's Army become. Thets why at the moment the only feasible way to win the game is by not producing liberty untill the end.
There is a 50% chance an Ai will go bonkers and suicide. If you start on a custom map, the other expeditions wont ven land and create cities...
The old wonders (cities of gold, fountain of youth etc are gone)
The pirates, bandits etc are gone.
The tax increase/goods prices thing is bugged. you can get 1g for any item including silver and eat %95 tax on topof it...

This is a purely personal opinion but i was bored in this MOD. I guess i should go for ANNO xxxx or old Colonisation instead of this half baked mod. Another half cooked game for the modding scene i guess. check the modding sites to get some decent fan made patches/pirate-portugual faction mods... I guess old sid is abandoning us too....

Nice list. You forgot to mention that they screwed up the education system to a point where it's hardly even worth building schools and universities.

Wow, hard to believe they would gaff a classic like that. Yuck. Maybe Sid's tired of people clamoring for a Colonization sequel all the time.

I really like the original Colonization. If you can find it you can probably get a copy for peanuts. I don't know how it runs on newer computers, though. I still pull mine out once every year or two and play a game, and I'm always surprised by how well it holds up over time.
