GOG.com about to hit 6 million sold record. Free Game Offer

The Vault Dweller

always looking for water.
http://www.gog.com/

Anytime now the counter on the frontpage (huge and at the top) will hit 6 million at which point everyone who accesses the site within 48 hours can download a free adventure game in Broken Sword. I'm not a big fan of adventure games, but I've enjoyed them enough to feel it's worth keeping track of this and telling all of you. Will repost here when they hit it.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

Wow, no idea they've sold that many, that's awesome for them. I'm ashamed to say I still haven't supported them yet, just haven't seen anything I didn't have yet.

I bough Fallout ad Fallout 2 their like two or three years ago, I planned on buying Planescape and Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption at some point

Not sure why so many people are so lyrical about Gog.

The titles they sell often don't work as well as advertised.

Most of the time (always?) they just slap on their installer and dosbox (when it's a dos game ofc) and let the community sort out the issues.

Their pricing method seems pretty ridiculous.

Do the original developers get some of our money?

A lot of games that are now being sold were abandonware before Gog slapped their installer on it and started charged 6 or 10€ for a copy.

I'm not 100% sure my complaints are legitimate so please enlighten me if I am mistaken.

All GOG games I've bought so far had been working perfect.

Examples? I've never seen this before... the one I can think of is the obscure DRM that was accidentally left in Moto Racer 2, but was later removed (and users were compensated).

Some examples from personal experience:

Interstate 76: crashes, graphical issues, bugs,...

Dungeon Keeper 2: crashes, graphical issues while the original disc version works perfectly fine

In general: Sound and FPS problems with many DosBox emulated "3d games".

What is "ridiculous" about charging a fair price across all regions? Would you prefer that ridiculous US dollar = Euros = pounds stuff most online stores do instead?

I find it strange that they basically charge either 6 or 10 € for every game.
I'm not sure a digital 2mb copy of a 20 year old game is worth as much as say a copy of Bloodlines or Arcanum.

Of course I would not prefer the inclusion of the silly usd=€ rule.

The copyright holders do. In some cases that might translate to royalties for the original developers, but in most cases, probably not.

Cheers, I had no idea how that worked.

It's not GOG's fault if the copyright holders decide they want to charge money for their games again. See Ultima and how EA decided to pull the abandonware projects around the Internet - they have been trying to raise awareness of the Ultima brand in preparation for their Facebook game. Additionally, in US law, copyright holders must actively protect their copyrights or risk losing them... so I'm not sure why you'd begrudge a company for protecting the assets it legally owns, even if you've grown used to pirating it with impunity.

Fair enough, for the record I was not advocating piracy in any way shape or form :-)

their forum is a damn good place to find help to run the game if it doesn't work well.

It is.

well at least you can find 20 years old games over there. Even if 6 or 10 euro might seem much.

But trying to get a game online with its package or something might be quite difficult sometimes. So I guess if GOG has it it might be the better choice. But I am just guessing here. Not that I really knew it.

I have never had a problem with GOG. I find GOG to be a very handy service and I am a satisfied customer.

I'd like to point out now that when I first posted the counter was at 915 thousand and now it's over 985 thousand. About half a day and they'll hit the 6 million mark.

Also yeah Brother None it says "unique" downloads. Of course no way to know if they're telling the truth given the debacle of that "closing down forever" thing.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

Never tried gog. If I were to get the two complete baldur's gates would I be able to use tutu and other mods with them?

They are all modfriendly, Planescape Torment which uses the same Engine and Moddingtools works like a charm with mods, even in the gog version. Shouldn't be an issue I think.

Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars

I'll pass.

[A copy of Beneath a Steel Sky is a nice thing to get just for signing up, though.]

Brilliant marketing from GoG, I wonder how much they made since they put up that silly timer.

How generous and awesome of them to give away Broken Sword
