Interplay Games 50% off on GOG.com

I have asked others before but might as well ask you as well, this are PC only right? Does the old mac version of fallout even run under Lion?

Any inputs on the other games? I've always wanted to try Giants Citizen Kabuto and Sacrifice. Should I finally play Lionheart or was the game really as bad as people talked about it being? Evolva always looked interesting too

[..] Steam has the post-apocalyptic RTS/FPS Nuclear Dawn on sale for €6,11 or $6.79. I have no idea if it's any good, though.

Thanks Kilus.

No, Steam is no good - not worth mentioning it here IMO.

The first half is actually a great game, but once you get into some of the larger dungeons it becomes a hack and slash game, which is a pity, because it one of the more beautiful isometric games, and the voice acting is very well done.

IMO the story could have been stronger, and the game less linear, but generally I think it's been a bit too harshly treated. If only it was less like Diablo, and more like Planescape Torment...

I'm playing through Lionheart now, I like what I've played so far. I hear the game begins to drop off after you leave Barcelona but for $3 I'd definitely recommend it so far, especially the GOG version because of the extras.

Thanks, you guys suckered me into it.

Fallout 2, Sacrifice, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Fallout Tactics, Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader, and Freespace 2 are all part of my collection now. Sigh, between this and the 3DO sale last weekend, GOG is punishing me.

Pixote nailed it: Lionheart is really, really a great game - at least the first half. I stopped playing (spoiler: a bit after Toulouse, iirc) when it becomes too enter-that-cave-and-beat-the-monsters. But it has a great combat system, and more than all a great ambiance, which is why I liked it. YOu must play it at least a bit :D

I played Sacrifice when I was younger, as far as I remember it was quite good, but I don't think it has much sense to still play it in 2012.

Fallout Tactics, well, is a must play, at least to know if you're part of those who like it or of those who hate it :)

Maybe I'll buy Castles 1&2, it looks good. But, dunno.

Good game as long as you don't expect choices but rather only some minor consequences if you don't finish all the missions' objectives.
Add me to the camp of people that didn't finish Lionheart. I was super excited to play it, only to have my excitement wane as I progressed through the story.

Falllout discount? Again?

It seems, only a lazy one wouldn't be selling Fallout dirt cheap these days...

Giants Citizen Kabuto

Yes, no other game has a group of alien mercs who are basically trying to pub crawl round a planet while at the same time aiding a rebellion and fix their ship they accidently crashed.

An epic tale or love, romance, dodgy humour and London accents... and lots of shooting.

Probably pick up Sacrifice, Giants and Messiah. Got Messiah on CD but it's a pain to get running properly as the cutscenes and cutscene sounds are on different disks.
Rough gem but very.... different. Also had a spear gun that pins enemies to walls before Painkiller. :V

Sacrifice is the best game ever, along with Fallout 1. Ahead of it's time (unfortunately). I can play it infinitely and not get bored. Giants is also great and I recommend playing it.

The first mac version of FO1 was OS 9, pre unix laced OS10. After a couple of upgrades, support for OS 9 was abandoned, maybe it stopped with Tiger.

There were FO 1+2 releases for OS 10.

Have found a PC emulater not so great for PC games, but Bootcamp well worth the effort,

just some hard drive space and a copy of Windows OS. and you got a 100% PC partition on mac hardware .

I set up a partitiom for XP, and have had no truoble with old PC games.

Have no idea how compatable Vista or Win 7 are in this situation.

More about Macs

As a followup to 4too above, there are some other issues with running the Mac versions on recent OS X releases.

Around the time of Leopard, or 10.5, ATI drivers for 256 colors were dropped from the OS install, so folks with ATI cards in their Macs could no longer play FO1 or 2. All they would get would be a black or white screen. You can search the fora for this ancient thread.

Then, with Lion, Apple discontinued Rosetta, which allowed PowerPC code-based apps to run in the Intel environment. The upshot of this was that even the lucky Nvidia folks now had a game icon with the dreaded barred-circle icon which means cannot be launched.

So, strictly speaking, support for FO on the Mac (and many older PowerPC code-based games) have been discontinued as of Lion, and cannot be played in the current and future Mac OS variants.

As 4too indicated, you can sully your Mac with WinXP on BootCamp and run a ton of older game software. Or, you can use VirtualBox to run a copy of Snow Leopard and still access Mac versions of these applications and games. This is the cheapest solution, however, this doesn't get around the ATI driver issue.

In the end, my solution was to find a 2009 MacMini for cheap that has Nvidia graphics, load Snow Leopard on it and connect it to a modest monitor for a relatively inexpensive Old-School gaming setup.
