'Mad Nation' Post-Apocalyptic TV show Megathread

Yeah, this thread, like the movie, just won't roll over and die like it should have a while ago. Everyone who's working on this movie has been really dedicated and kept on working even after the few major set backs we've had.

More pictures of the city:

the town looks familiar, did they ever film a episode of Star trek there? The planet is ruled by children and when they reached puberty they turned into zombies and died?

Any chance of seeing a few more pictures from that town?

Heh, maybe you should shoot post-apocalyptic films when the weather isn't quite so lovely.
<strike>It's ze movies. He could turn it into disney land in a few clicks!</strike>
Yeah, I hope you can turn down the weather a bit. Looks like a bright "future".

I agree that it looks a little nice out. I did it on the nicest day possible for the best sunlight: my camera needs good light to get any kind of color detail. But I am going to play with color correction to make it look less cheerful: I want it to look sunny in the dryed out desert kind of way, rather than the it's a nice day out kind of way. Also, part of the reason I chose to do it on the best day possible is because the city is supposed to be deserted for no aparent reason: on a day when everyone should be out, nobody can be found because everyone is hiding from the Cult attacks.

I doubt this is the same city from that episode (I've seen the one you mean): as I recall, a lot of their sets were in california. However, Fitchburg is a failed factory town: one of hundreds of citys around the country that were industrial revolution boom towns that slowly died out as the economy shifted to imported goods. So it wouldn't suprise me if they used a similar town with lots of abandoned factories to shoot that episode.

And yes, we've got quite a few more photos. Some time when I've got good bandwidth, I'll try to upload some more. My photobucket account is slow moving, possibly because of the few hundred photos in it.

Hi there. I'll clarify some points since you're new to this thread:

1: this movie has been in production for a very long time because I don't get to work on it often, and because it costs me a lot of cash to produce. It will hopefully be done by next summer, but you'll notice that the projected release date has been consistantly pushed back further and further as the production goes on.

2: I don't update as often as I'd like: when I'm at school, I don't get enough done on the movie to update often and when I'm at home for the summer I have internet access for less than 2 hours total a month.

3: the movie is still being made. Yeah, I know, you're probably thinking "geeze, when are you going to give up already?" Answer: never. The reason it's still being made after almost 3 years of making it is simple: I'm too damn dedicated/stubborn/stupid to quit. It will be finished, eventually.

To answer your question, I'll respond with a full update.

We now have about 5 of the scenes re-edited completely, to make up for the loss of my complete edit file a few months back. We've also been struggling with music: trying to decide whether to form a band to do the sound track, use public domain music, or create it ourselves using a computer music generator such as Garage Band.

As far as shooting goes, we've been struggling with difficult actors to schedual a shoot for either of the two primary scenes that I want to finish before august. One of our actors moved 30 miles away, and the other works nights, and is thus asleep all day, every day. Soon I will resort to re-casting the latter, but recasting the former is not an option since he's already in other scenes we've shot.

Finally, the following neat developements have happened:

We used my camera to record sound effects while playing with the combined firearms collections of myself and a friend, and just for fun we editied the footage into a short feature for the bonus features on the DVD. Basically it's just a lot of footage of us using various guns.

Also, we finally found a truck for the movie, and let me just say, it's perfect. It's a friend's four-wheeling truck, and if I've ever seen anything that looks like it's right out of the road warrior, it's this thing. I don't know for sure if we'll be allowed to use it or not, but it's a pretty good chance.

Okay. I think that's everything. With luck, we'll finally get to shoot the caravan scene some time next week.

Well, just for an anniversary bump *bump*, I'm excited for this movie. Next time you get on, mind filling us in on all the firearms you've used in this project? It'd be cool to see your little military stockpile. :D

^^^
Here's the best list I can come up with from memory of what we've used so far, though our arsenal is not limited to these. All guns are real, and in firing condition, unless otherwise noted.

Firearms used off camera for sound effects:
-Bushmaster AR 15
-Benelli 12 Gauge sporter Semi automatic shotgun
-My customized Ruger Blackhawk .357, for Gray's revolver's sounds

IMG_1050.jpg

It's my pet gun smithing project.

Firearms used on camera as props:
-M4 carbine (airsoft replica, one of the all steel ones)
-Glock 29 subcompact 10mm (airsoft)
-Bushmaster AR 15
-Colt 1851 .44 Army Cap and Ball Revolver
-Mauser 98 -or- Mosin Negant M44 *
-Beretta 9mm 1934 (disabled)
-Original DWM American Eagle 9mm Luger (disabled)
-Ithica Gun Co. 12 gauge double (disabled, barrels cut @ 18")
-Gray's Revolver, a non-firing prop I designed and built
-Misc. Plastic, Metal, and Wooden non-firing prop guns

* I haven't decided which gun to use. It will be in a scene where a sniper is shooting at Gray from about 100 yards away. Gray defeats the sniper by trying to shoot back with his pistol, missing the sniper but injuring the enemy with shrapnel the shot from the pistol blows the scope off the rifle (as was proven to be possible but non-lethal by Mythbusters...heh, nerd moment). I'll take votes from ya'll: first gun to five votes is the winner... and no, you can't vote five times, Vlad. :)

Okay, so updates:

The editing process has been going well: we've got about half of what we've shot re-edited. That being said, we've still only got half of the movie, considering that we lost two scenes in the big hard drive crash.

The first of those two is the scene with Marcus, the doctor, screen shots from which can be found on the earlier pages of this thread. Unfortunately, Patric, the actor playing Marcus, these days spends all his time running a small business, working for MIT, and living 30 miles away. However I've spoken with him and as soon as the caravan scene is squared away I'll schedule a weekend shoot and hopefully get that scene done before I move back to school in late August. The big reason we haven't shot the caravan scene yet is because our actor is being very difficult to set shooting dates with. I basically told him today that when I get back from a brief trip to my upstate NY home , I intend on scheduling a shoot for the movie. If he can't do it, I'm calling my backup guy, who is probably in the long run the better choice anyway. So, either way, we'll get one scene at least shot within the next few weeks...I hope :/

The second of the lost scenes has been replaced with a gunfight scene. I'm hoping to keep the caravan scene short, with minimal dialog without losing plot info, so that it can be followed up soon after with the gunfight to throw a little more action into the movie: the original draft of the script ended up being too reliant on dialog, and a movie that was supposed to be an action movie didn't have much action in it til the last ten minutes of the film.

If the schedule goes well enough, and we get those two once lost scenes done, I'll finally be organized enough to shoot the gunfight and some of the ending fight scene while I'm at school. I'm also hoping to land a location for the outside portions of the ending fight scene before the summer is out.

So basically, if we're really lucky, I'll have this movie finally done just in time for you all to watch it right before you go out to buy Fallout 3.

This has been getting pretty hard to do. The forced slow pace of this production has made it increasingly stressful and discouraging. There have been moments where I have almost wanted to scrap it, but my love for the characters, and my dedication to this story has always won out. But I have to thank you all again for your continued support: if I didn't have anyone cheering me on, I doubt I would have made it this far, and the support of my friends, even those I only know through this thread, ensures that someday you'll all see this movie. Whether you like it or not is the only question. :)

EDIT: crap internet connection resulted in this last update being posted five or six times. Hooray for deleting extra posts.

Man are you on Broadband or are you on Dial up?

Every time I see a post about this flick I get more and more excited.

I'm going with the Mosin-Nagant rifle. Even though I have German blood coursing through my veins, I love some of the various Soviet-era firearms.

Good luck with the shooting, and I can't wait to download the finished product (will it be free for download?).

Heh, that's a complicated one. When I'm in my home, that is my appartment in Fitchburg during the school year, I have fairly reliable wireless and post/check email/surf daily. However this summer has been crazy: when I'm living at my parent's home, I have only dial up so slow that it's not even worth my time. I can use my girlfriend's laptop, but I have to drive to the next town over and either bum wireless from friends or use it in coffee shops, libraries, etc. And of course I hate to be a bother to her and borrow her laptop and drive off to some house or shop in the next town daily, so I only get online probably once every two weeks or so.

Agreed. Though if I can't figure out a way to work around the straight bolt handle when mounting the scope (temporarily for the movie), I might be forced to go with the Mauser.

NEW UPDATE:
We finally got the damn caravan scene done. In the end I had to recast the part. But it came out very well, it's a pretty fast scene and looks great, and the acting was pretty spot on for what I wanted. Very gory, since it was supposed to be the site of a cannibal attack. My girlfriend experimented with fake blood recipes, and we got three different types in the end: one that was very thin and purplish that worked well for looking like drying blood on the ground, one medium-thickness blood that worked excellently on the actor and for the spattered/dripped/trails of blood, and one made with flour that left clumps of thick, bright red goo that looked like pulped brain matter/giblets.

With this scene done, we're almost recovered from my hard drive crash. We've got two more scenes to shoot, and three to edit, then we'll be done with the first two acts of the movie. As far as shooting goes, we've got about 60% done: we have half of the scenes done, but there's a few very short ones left. I'm hoping to get one, maybe two scenes done before I go back to school in late August. Then in Fitchburg, I have two scenes to do in that area and about three to do at home during the school year. If I can get those five done before May of '08, it's plausible that I'd have the move ready for full online release (yes, there will be free downloads) by late summer/early fall, with the DVD coming soon after.

Look up pictures on how the Reds threw on scopes in WW2, I think they had it hooked to the side, to not interrupt the firing mechanisms of the rifle.

In fact, this is a good example, though it'd cost you $50. You might find something better, but it was the best one I could find on the first page. You may have to screw it on there, so maybe want to use some kind of glue to stick a mounting spot on there, and then go into that. Mosin-Nagant scope mount

^^^
Interesting idea. I'll experiment with creating some kind of similar scope mount.

New updates:

I bought a new gun. It's a brazillian made 12 gauge double that I've already cut down to 18 1/4 inches in barrel lenth. Basically the same gun as Gray's shotgun except with a full stock. So we can add that to the stockpile list in my last big post.

The summer ended with two major scenes done an a lot of editing. The scene in Marcus' home has been re-shot, finally, and the Caravan scene as mentioned is also complete.

I also have a interesting little sneak preview edited from a portion of the caravan scene. I made it for a local film fest being put on by a friend. Anyone interested in watching? I'll post it on google video as soon as I can remember my google video password, and on my website as soon as I pay my hosting bill, which will happen when I remember my paypal password...I should write things down I guess.

Quick update: We've got 10 out of 18 scenes shot, and of those, 6 are roughly edited. I'm preparing to schedual the shooting of three scenes to be shot in the fitchburg area: a gunfight, a capturing of the hero, and an escaping of the hero.

I'm also working on finding replacements for two actors who are rediculously unpredictable, and also begining serious part of the work on the musical score, that being trying to find a musician/band to do parts of it and have my music person work on the other parts.

I'm also starting production on another project, a sci fi tv show. It's a fan show based on the briefly telivised series "Firefly". I will probably have some trouble juggling two side projects at once, but since I can only shoot 3 of the 8 remaining scenes before new years, I'll need something to keep me busy.

Also, due to the lack of voiced interest, I'm putting the Sneak Preview on hold to work on the movie itself. That being said if anyone wants to see it I can have it online in less than a week, since all I have to do is make a new music track for it. Don't worry, there's no spoilers in it, just a lot of blood and guts.

I want to see it, but I can wait. :) Also, Firefly? Is it supposed to be in the "Firefly" universe, or inspired by it?
