'Mad Nation' Post-Apocalyptic TV show Megathread

^^^
Haha, Revewers make me nervous, but I'll let you know anyway. My only fear is that others will be more critical of the movie than I am being, and I'm already being pretty rough on myself. I wouldn't be suprised if that I don't hate the final project, everyone else will.

Is it supposed to be in the "Firefly" universe...?

Yes. We're still in the pre-production writing/brainstorming phase, but so far, we know it's in the Firefly universe, picks up exactly where the movie (Serenity) left off, and will revolve around a completely different set of characters and their roll in the second rising of the Browncoat Rebellion. And Carib, the one upside to the series never being finished is that it leaves it open ended for the fans to play with: some comic books have been published to bridge the gap between the movie and show, and the fan community is starting to explore fan fiction more as well, just as I have.

And two votes is enough for me to put out the sneak preview, though this week and next I'll be a little swamped with school, finding a job, gunsmithing projects, and various other things. I've also got to find a new FTP program for uploading things to my website that's simple, free, and Mac compatable, so if anyone knows of anything, let me know. I use and love Transmit but can't afford to pay for it and my trial software ran out -thumbs down-.

Fast update!

Movie: 10/18 scenes have been shot, working on schedualing another to be shot some time in the next month. Hoping to find someone to make me a new music track for the sneak preview, at which point I'll release it. Editing is coming along bit by bit. Also working on the last big problematic set issue, that of the last scene. I'm hoping to streamline and simplify the requirements of the scene so as to make it easier to deal with.

I'm also looking hard for someone who can do my sound track. My girlfriend likes to tinker with it but I don't want to add to her already busy life by involving her, and I like to play with garage band but nothing profesional comes from that. I'm also debating whether to have western sounding music, like that of Ennio Morricone, or more rock type music, probably similar to the sound track from Bubba Ho Tep. Ideas?

I just watched Black Snake Moan again the other day, and I'm now on a new deep south blues kick. This is something that happens every 6 months or so with me: I find a new style of music, usually a variant of blues or jazz, and go nuts over it for a while. I've decided to post some adverts looking for a musician or band to create my sound track, and as soon as they've done the sneak preview (which will be their audition of sorts). I'm thinking at this point combining a lonesome western sound with a steel guitar blues type of sound...some suggestions and feedback from you folks might help in the brainstorming?

In addition to soundtrack stuffs, I've been diligently revising picky bits about the script: one of my lecture classes, I do nothing but ignore the instructor and work on the script for this movie, so I spend about 3 hours a week doing it. I've also been editing, but I need to organize my tapes and find the scenes that need to be captured.

The sneak preview is done and ready to go online.

That being said, my website isn't working. So I've gotta wait until Godaddy renews my domain name, and then if it's still not working, I'll email my server guy.

As soon as possible, the sneak preview goes up. It's short, sweet, spoiler free, and covered in blood.

I won't blow it, but I'll say its mostly a teaser than anything else. The clip is too short to day much of anything about anything because I wanted something that would be anti-spoiler crowd friendly while still being enough to show that the movie's still going and what's being done with it.

However, my site is still failing to load, so off with the angry emails to my peeps.

What? If you mean to imply that I'm narcissistic, I'm confused why you assume this and somewhat offended.

After a couple of months fighting with my hosting provider, I'm ditching them and starting an account with Pat, the before mentioned actor in the movie, who also has his own massive server. Updates will follow as this progresses.

a true hero is never forgoten
forgotten!

Gray looks a bit too relaxed in the sneak peak. I mean, he's sneaking up on a partly destroyed wagon which clearly shows signs of recent activity. Might be a reason behind it. We don't know yet.

The trailer shows some cool footage. Sounds feels a bit unpolished. Some high frequency tones here and there.

Overall really cool project. Still waiting...

Yeah, I noticed that typo in the trailer a while ago, but i never bothered to fix it heh.

The thing about Gray's character is that he is usually pretty relaxed and cool headed. There's a scene two scenes later where he's being shot at, and you see the same thing, but we explore it a bit more there (this scene is next on the schedule, to be shot as soon as the snow melts). He doesn't care about dying because he doesn't feel like he has all that much to live for, so he's a little overly head strong in that sense. This will be made more clear in his nation, which is not yet included here but will be in the final cut.

The sound on the trailer feels unpolished or the sound on the sneak peak? We didn't do anything to clean up the sound on the trailer because when I made it I didn't have any sound editing equipment, whereas I did on the sneak peak. I'll say upfront that my camera is hell with sound, but I can get it to at least B movie quality with Soundtrack Pro.

Any more comments? How did you like the set? It was kind of a pain in the ass hah.

The trailer is fine, but I don't like the sneak peak. You should have taken an action packed fragment instead, this fragment is just so slow and silent. Nothing really happens. Which sucks.

But the trailer is really nice. :ok: I hope there are gonna be some chicks in it as well, though, 'cause now it has got this uneasy feel of a bunch of construction site workers who are about to get mean and dirrrrrrty. This flick needs a shag or a rape scene or whatever, to spice things up a little.

If I were a moviemaker, I'd only make trailers, tons of them, and I'd never ever make the actual movies.

This is an interesting point, but there were no action packed sequences in this scene. In fact, most of the action packed sequences begin in the scenes that follow this one, which I have not shot yet. Originally, I intended on having a fight sequence here, but I opted for a more suspense building scene for the upcoming action. Most of the action happens in the last third of the movie.

As far as raping and shagging, there's none of that, because I actually purposely wrote this film with a very conspicuous lack of a love interest. However there is -a- female lead, and a near rape is probably likely. Like in most of my films, most of my cast is male, because the only actresses I know are theatre people, and theatre people are usually bitchy and arrogant...more so than the rest of the acting community, at least.

Newest Update:
We shot the last scene of the second act yesterday. It went very well: lots of nice production stills were taken so as soon as I can I'll post some more photos.

We are now ready to start the last of the shooting, IE the cult battle and the subsequent events. I've been able to secure a location for the battle scene, an old farm that's maintained by a family friend. Now I need to work out the scheduling and the casting.

EDIT: Photo time!

Thanks to Fitchburg's high abandonment rate, we have no shortage of run down buildings to shoot in. This was one of the few times when I actually went through official channels to secure a location: calling landowners for permission, notifying police of weapon usage in public, etc. Most of these photos are of setting up shots and gunfight blocking and choreography.

EDIT:
In that last photo, you see a white building in the background. Does this building look too nice to pass? I have a shot I really want to use, but it has this building clearly in the background. I'll post a photo when I get the chance.
