Most Overrated Games of This Gen?

It Wandered In From the Wastes
http://immoralgamers.com/?p=41

Beneath the gloss they’re the same fucking game, and that would be pardonable if Fallout 3 had done anything to improve upon Oblivion’s shortcomings. The visuals, the dialogue system, the generic quests, the housing system, even the voice actors – damn near everything remains unchanged. Damn near everything that was wrong with Oblivion is carried over to Fallout 3. The combat isn’t spared. It uses the same moronic, bum-rushing AI. Then there’re the melee weapons. After picking up a sword for the first time and swinging it around a bit, I felt a sense of deja vu. I fired up Oblivion, loaded my character, equipped a sword, swung it about, and sure enough: same goddamn animations. Same approach to melee-fighting. No changes, no evolution. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a retextured sword from Oblivion. What fucking laziness.

I've yet to see a negative review of Fallout 3. I don't find it irredeemably horrible, but it is a far, far cry from great, so it's nice to see someone who isn't a Black Isle diehard trash it, even if it is an obscure blog. It's also nice to be called a psychopath, but I suppose we've kinda earned that.

Well there are enough negative reviews of the fucking travesty that is Fallout 3 right here, and unlike the moronic fanbots everywhere else, people here tend to critique the games' shortcomings as a game on its own merits regardless of whether it is a Fallout game or not.

If only the article itself wasn't ridiculous.

Orange Box, overrated? I've literally never heard that, nor would I ever believe it - it's one of the best gaming packages of all time and included three of the best games of the past year, as well as one of the best games of all time.

Bioshock? This one I've heard, but not from many people, and I again disagree strongly. This is right up there with Half-Life 2 for me.

Grand Theft Auto 4? I hope not, I'll find out in two weeks :-x.

I've definitely felt some of the carryover from Oblivion, but I'm on the other side of the fence in that I enjoyed that game. The only thing in that post regarding Fallout 3 that isn't opinion is also blatantly false - if anybody thinks Oblivion, out of the box, looks better than Fallout 3, they're blind. There's no other way I can rationalize it. Some may like the art style of one or the other better (more color in Oblivion), but this goes back to subjectivity, and I've not heard anyone list art direction as one of Fallout's faults regardless.

I was thinking of professional reviewers working for mainstream publications. You'd think that at least someone wouldn't have been paid off. It's an average game and too much like Oblivion, definitely fails as a Fallout sequel - 9s and 10s being thrown around like hotcakes are just fucking painful to behold.

I would say that it is. Well, specifically Portal. I love each game that came in Orange Box, but damned if it isn't overrated. Being good and being overrated are not mutually exclusive.

But maybe I'm just jaded by the numerous morons that vomit "TEH CAEK IS A LIE LOLOL ^____^"

I liked Portal. It definitely didn't deserve the insane amount of hype, but I still think it was a good game. Team Fortress 2 (the main part of the Orange Box) was overrated, IMO. Then again, maybe that's just because I suck at it ;).

Personally, though? I think WoW is the most overrated game of all time. Even moreso than all the Final Fantasy games (and JRPGs in general). Thing is, at least JRPGs have many vocal critics, and while some people like them, they're not well-liked enough to qualify as overrated. WoW, though... millions of people all grinding and chatting. Cripes. I just couldn't do it.

I honestly find Fallout 3's character models ugly as sin, and I don't even dislike it that much.

Probably that, I can understand the annoyance :p. Portal was the strongest part of the package IMO - very simple and yet very rewarding/fun. I love story-driven games and even prefer them, so Portal was a big surprise for me.

Even with that opinion taken into account, they look no worse than Oblivion's, and the environmental effects / etc. blow away their previous offerings. Compare long range vistas between the two games.

No, I was wrong. I still think it's overrated.

I played Oblivion on the PC, with a shitton of mods that make things look better, so I can't comment any more here

What I'm trying to say is I don't even remember how vanilla Oblivion looks like.
VVVVVVV

I tried to after the fact, but you apparently replied to that reply the second I posted it as I couldn't delete it o.O.

Nor do they have to be taken as the same thing. You loved every part of the package, it was $50 for the whole thing, and it's overrated? o.O. It's okay for you to admit that it lived up to the hype, even if you may be against doing so because of just how high the reviews were. This was the best game (taken as one whole) in years, try to avoid calling it overrated just because everybody loves it so much.

Even if that's not what you mean, even if you see the game as, say, a 9/10 or 8/10, it still has no place on this list.

Trying to avoid including those, naturally.

I never said they were the same thing. Don't complicate a simple thing here: The games were good, and I found enjoyment in them. They deserved high ratings. I still think that they are still overrated.

Don't tell me how to feel and what to do.

And in battleground/world pvp/instances/raiding/arena.

I played the game from a few months after release until a little less than a year ago and I will never play another MMO again. But honestly give credit where credit is due.

It keeps millions entertained with an amazingly simple/idiot friendly system but also manages to keep (most) hard core players together with the raiding/arena system.

I once skipped school to finish a 17 hour AV. :P

As far as the article:

His opinions on some of the games seem to be a bit biased by other factors than just game play. I also find a disturbing lack of Halo 3 being mentioned on the list. If there is ever a list of "over rated" games no matter what generation Halo deserves a spot :P

I cant say I agree with MGS4 being number 1 either but honestly that I will self admit that is probably due to my own bias of being a rabid fan boy. Metal Gear Solid game out when I was in 5th grade and I have been forever loyal to Hideo Kojima ever sense.

I loved the 8 hours+ worth of cut scenes and would have watched double that if it was in there. All the same I can see how someone could get frustrated with it especially if they are not a huge fan of the previous ones.

Honestly tho Metal Gear Solid 4 was for the fans and meant to be a grand send off to an epic story line.

I will stop myself there... I am sorry I honestly did not even realize I was typing this much about Metal Gear Solid. It is pretty much the only series I have an emotional attachment to.

Holy shit, you're right. This list is utterly flawed.

Bioshock sucks, if you can't lose in a game then it isn't a god damn game.

LOL it dont sucks it just got 1 big flaw instant respawn but overall story & spirit and so on is great...any way you could say same thing about old System Shock or just every game with quick save...

I enjoyed Halo 2 but haven't played Halo 3 yet, I'm still wondering why. I love the MGS series, but I just can't pretend that MGS4 was anything but a pile of garbage. In my opinion, Kojima took a piss over his own beloved franchise with MGS4.

This seems to be more of a GG thread, so I moved it and changed the title slightly.
