It Wandered In From the Wastes

I've yet to see a negative review of Fallout 3. I don't find it irredeemably horrible, but it is a far, far cry from great, so it's nice to see someone who isn't a Black Isle diehard trash it, even if it is an obscure blog. It's also nice to be called a psychopath, but I suppose we've kinda earned that.
Beneath the gloss they’re the same fucking game, and that would be pardonable if Fallout 3 had done anything to improve upon Oblivion’s shortcomings. The visuals, the dialogue system, the generic quests, the housing system, even the voice actors – damn near everything remains unchanged. Damn near everything that was wrong with Oblivion is carried over to Fallout 3. The combat isn’t spared. It uses the same moronic, bum-rushing AI. Then there’re the melee weapons. After picking up a sword for the first time and swinging it around a bit, I felt a sense of deja vu. I fired up Oblivion, loaded my character, equipped a sword, swung it about, and sure enough: same goddamn animations. Same approach to melee-fighting. No changes, no evolution. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a retextured sword from Oblivion. What fucking laziness.
