New game, Bioshock.

First time out of the vault
NMA has taken some interest in Bioshock. So I'm curious who else is here that might have a pre-order and anxiously awaiting the soon to be release of Bioshock, besides myself!?

There are quite a few things about this game that have caught my interest. For starters, the setting and atmosphere of the game are quite unique. How many games offer the player a chance to visit a vast city deep under water? Not to mention the city is a warped visionary's creation set in the late 50's.

The previews of Bioshock during E3 dissapointingly show the game as being another mind numbing shooter with a unique setting as it's only hook. That has me worried we won't be seeing another inventive and complex game that was System Shock 2.
And to add further worry to this, the developers have themselves gone quiet about the RPG aspects of the game here at the last minute, and are now trying to sell the game as an action title above anything else. Except the lead developer Ken Levine, mentions that despite the game being action oriented as a draw for the shooter crowd, there will be something appealing for everybody at least. He is refering to the strong story elements.

In my opinion that statement is a cause for concern. Still, I will be buying this game because the pro's exceed whatever negatives I see with only the previews to go by.

i think that, quality wise, this game will be somewhere between half life and deus ex 2.

but im okay with that.

i fully intend to play this.

time will tell.

and also: it's being marketed as an FPS with some RPG elements, don't forget that. don't expect an RPG.

edit: typo

I don't think they've ever marketed this as an RPG, they have marketed this as a spiritual successor to System Shock 2. And Shock 2 wasn't really full of RPG goodness either.

I believe that while being a generally good game, it will fall short of some/many peoples expectations. It appears to me that a number of people hope for too much from BioShock, though the developers have been honest in presenting it.

While I am interested, I don't have a X-box 360, and I don't believe my computer will handle the game. That puts off my purchase of the game until the indeterminate time that I build a new rig.

When I think of RPG, I think of Pen & Paper derived classics like Fallout or Baldur's Gate. Obviously System Shock 2 is not quite an RPG. And yet System Shock 2 has a lot of depth and complexity to it, it isn't just a First Person Shooter.

With Bioshock, it looks like there is a stronger version of FPS than SS2 ever had. However I am worried the game will really be dumbed down compared to System Shock in any other feature of the game. Perhaps I know too much about the game...

It's a smart man's FPS, where you actually have to think about what you're doing and react with tactics rather than sheer violence...

That's why it's doomed to be out-shined by Halo 3 in the mass gaming community.

That and it doesn't have giant laser guns!

i saw the demo on youtube and been reading about it at TTLG forums :) i must say .. i am salivating .

so far it looks like its gonna be system shock lite ! with added style ... not perfect but lovely
Looking Glass Lives !

10/10 is always bullshit.

no game made by a human ever deserves 10/10. we are flawed & hence everything we produce is flawed. ;)

It depends what is the meaning for that 10.

If 10 means perfection, there is not perfect game.
If 10 means master piece, I think that there is many "10" games.

10/10 should, by definition, be perfection. There is nothing higher than 10/10.

In any case, it is the usual self-delusion of the reviewers. Gamesradar notes a few criticism, yet still gives the game a 10/10. Heh.

Still, it looks to be a really good game.

Heh :D .
Maybe they think that they can really enjoy only perfect games...
A 9/10 masterpiece is not enough for them really enjoy XD .

I pre-ordered it. I've asked some questions of Ken Levin, via PM's, and he actually answered them.

That's gold to me.

That could be in a maths examination, but reviews are not mathematics. A game can't be perfect, but can be a masterpiece.

Anyway, I don't care the numbers, Ithink that it will be a great game. I have preordered too.

If you're going to rate a masterpiece 10/10, then you can't rate a perfect game properly at all. Hence why 10/10 isn't a useful number. Every game has its places that can be improved, and as long as they do, they should not get a 10/10 score. The reason many games still get a 10/10 score, is that most reviewers lack so-called testicles and almost never rate a game below 7/10, unless they're complete crap and they get a 2/10 or so.

The worst thing is that a lot of games don't deserve 9/10 and still get it. It was the reason why I don't read gaming magazines anymore.

For example Baldur's Gate 2 was pretty addictive and had some good features, but also had a some things that sucked or could use an improvement - magazines gave it 9/10 - I would give it 6-7/10.
