NMA article: About Fallout Fans

We've heard the same tired arguments over and over again. "You guys will never be happy with any Fallout sequel." "You guys are just an angry elite with no sense of reality." "You guys just want it to be 1998 all over again."

There are some things about such statements that can be debated. But too much of the popular opinion on Fallout fans is based on hearsay, falsehoods and downright bullshit. We'll always enjoy our position as some of the most hardass fans out there, but it's time to dispell some of the worst falsehoods.

We at NMA decided to write an article about this, entitled Glittering Gems of Hatred: Eleven angry guys on a website. It will be released in three parts over the coming week. This week's first installment is a bit dry, and serves as the set-up for the rest. It is a history of the Fallout fanbase with a focus on the interaction between fans and devs.

Coming weekend the meat of the article will be released, which will talk about Fallout fans' reputation as a bitter bunch and will take a look at the dangers of being disloyal to a franchise.

Good job. Maybe this will clear things up for the people and they start to realize what this all is about. Of course, that is, if "the people" bother to read the article before posting shitty, tired arguments.

Great article, but as the above poster said, I bet the morons will never read it and go on to spout things out of their arse.

Although i am one of those who post these kind of arguments, but i will keep my mouth shut until i see the whole cycle of articles that is promised.
First one works for me though, as it is actual history of Fallout universe.

How sweet. Hurray for morons.

The whole thing is 6,000-7,000 words, so I don't expect anyone but the interested to read it.

But even so, even if it is read only by people who already agree with it, those people will have food for thought, and can spread arguments they like in a gospel-esque manner in debates elsewhere.

this was a long time coming, i guess...

you had better not fuck thisone up!!! ;)

Cool article. Hope it will be taken into consideration and that Bethesda will soon prove us all wrong but I really doubt it.

Let me start by saying that this was an incredibly well written and insightful article. Though I was lurking around during most of the noted events (and read through the various news bits and forum posts about the things that happened prior to my joining NMA), it was still very informative. It was also an enjoyable read.

I look forward to reading the next two installments.

Keep up the good work!

Very nice article, can't wait to continue down memory lane, and hopefully people will stop by and give the article a read

Nice article. I wounder what kind of comment gayspy is going to make about this one, if any. Or if they can read anything that long.

Nice introduction. Am looking forward to reading the other two articles, and seeing how some of the accusations often leveled at the community get debunked.

I was going for a similar approach some time ago but eventually gave up since i consider my writing to be incredibly amateurish, and eventually the lack of time and prospect of writing other articles got in the way. I am planning on doing a Fallout-related piece, if possible, in the near future but it has to do with the gameplay side of things and not the fanbase.

Are you going to touch on the whole "NMA are forum fascists angle"? Several kiddies use that as a recurring complain, especially at the GameFAQs forums and I'm kind of tired of having to repeat myself to them.

Good work, in any case :)

Wasn't planning to. That's an issue of perspective and is too arguable, thus throwing the article back to a form of apologism rather than analysis.

So I was planning to skip it.

That was a really good read, cant wait for the next two pieces, though it does raise a couple of points

1) Rosh could easily have made up the 11 angry guys all by himself ;)

2) I think that because we were all a little 'mad' at being shafted by interplay over the years that we probably took out frustrations out on Bethsedia without due cause. Sure I'm a privitely thinking "they're gonna screw it up" but thats a mind set caused by interplay rather than by anything I know about Bethsedia.

Oh I just thought of a thrid point:

3) Bethsedia would do well to communicate with us here, I mean toss us a few bones and at least talk to us a bit more, they dotn need to tell us if its turn based or FPS but rather just communicate and stuff. I've never seen any dev that posts on NMA get flammed, they are always treated with a reverrent awe of sorts.

Then learn.
They've said they will do 'what they do best' and that that isn't a top-down isometric system. Their past track record on treating franchises has been absolutely shit. And then there are the VDweller and Rosh leaks...

Also, good article Kharn.
