A bit of talk about Fallout 3, Arcanum, ToEE and some stuff about the MMO he's working on, it's also the final part.

I'm actually glad he talked about it more than "I liked Fallout 3", when he said he wanted a Fallout 3 to be much more original instead of just re-using Super Mutants I wondered what a Troika Fallout 3 might have involved. :(

I agree with Mr. Cain that Fallout 3 should have had some new fresh ideas, not the same ideas than the previous games. There was millions of possibilities but they chose to stick with super mutants and Enclave...

Everyone knows, that super mutants and enclave are what Fallout is about. Silly Tim.

Also explosions and the LOL humour.

He talked about the use of RPG and FPS in FO3 as if they would be a good idea (that's the way I understood him) for a sin-off.

I wonder what MMO he's been working on for those 5 years.

They made it something that...Fallout 3 fits with Oblivion in their line of products. Where...I don't think Fallout 1 and 2 would have fit with their product line as well.

And that's the whole bag of tricks summed up as neatly as you can't. The Fallout franchise did not fit in Bethesda's line of products. Fallout 3 did.

Well, it fit because they shoe-horned it into their McRPG mold.

Was the intention ever otherwise?

The spiritual successor to Fallout is Arcanum.
FO3 is the spiritual successor to Oblivion.

Is there a place where I can find that Arcanum art, it's wonderful.
That was all in the manual, albeit monochromatic IIRC. Seeing it in color does Boyarsky's work justice.

I'm glad with these interview series, but I'm a tad sad Arcanum didn't get much attention. And I would have loved to hear some more info on the canceled post-apoc Troika project. So yeah.

Amen to that.

Great series of interviews, and his summary of FO3 was spot on, IMO (although not as harsh as mine).

However, I'm not enthused about his working on another MMO... like we need another one on the market.

Such a great interviews, I wish they were at least an hour each : ).

Too bad no mention of Vampire Bloodlines, best fpp RPG ever :(

And I REALLY gotta play Arcanum sometime soon, that intro alone sent shivers down my spine, amazing music.

Actually, Tim Cain only did some programming on Bloodlines, and aside from that wasn't really directly involved with the project. Leon Boyarsky was the project lead on it, and it would be great if Matt interviewed him too in the future.

You can get it pretty cheap off gog.com.

I already have a nice original retail box, I just never got around to it.
But it is in my backlog, getting higher every day..

I never finished it, but I remember it was good. I don't remember why I never finished it though.

I have a strict "no drugs" policy for games in my backlog, but you should see how much they drink!

This was a really great interview.

I really need to play Arcanum again. It's been a few years, and that is definitely one of the better RPGs ever. I loved it for how original it was, considering it used a lot of familiar themes. I really enjoyed the crafting system, with the engineering schematics, as a counter to magic users learning spells.

The crafting system in Arcanum is pretty interesting to me. In normal, I don't really like crafting systems, as they annoy me in 9 of 10 cases. But Arcanum made it so simple, easy and still somewhat complex, that I really liked it to craft stuff. I'll guess that was because you never need more than two items to craft another item, which you then can use in combination with something else, to craft the next item, etc. It was always easy to overwatch, without you having to ninja-learn a lot of production tables first.

ah, another good interview chunk. does remind me i need to pick up arcanum on gog.com. while i do have various copies, ranging in age, of fallout 1 and 2, i do no longer have my arcanum copy. :(

it's sad that there are few well thought-out games like these anymore.
