What are the best things? (recommendations thread?)

Speaking of astronomy, one simply has to acknowledge that when it comes to things that you can study, physics is by far the best. From my own experience I can say that the combination of the smug sense superiority of one's own intellect, rivaling only philosophy, with the disposable income of someone who didn't waste his time on bullshit, is just the best.

You studied physics, Hass?

I thought about getting into astrophysics, but honestly, I'm not that smart, lol. It would go over my head.

Yeah, got an MSc. in physics with a focus on experimental condensed matter physics (basically applied quantum mechanics), but these days I'm working mostly as an engineer on laser system technology developing optics and processes. Got a new experiment coming up that is more physics-related, though.
Best things:
Tortex-Jazz-III-pick.jpg

The Dunlop Jazz III Tortex 1.14 mm pick. Purple, black or white, all great, supreme control, just the right thickness and snappiness, very little wear. I have been using Jazz III picks for over ten years, starting with the black nylon version, then using the yellowish Ultex version for a long time, but finally settling on the 1.14 mm Tortex version. So good. One pick can last months before the tip is worn down too much. Started with the Pitch Black version, but now I got a pack of whites because they're easier to find when dropping them.
Honestly, if you play guitar, try these picks.

I can attest to how great those picks are. When I played bass, I’d oftentimes break picks on the heavy strings. Before I started finger-picking, the Tortex ones were the only picks that wouldn’t break when playing for extended periods of time.

For bass I like using Fender Medium picks, although I mostly play with fingers. I don't hit too hard, so they last a long while. The Jazz IIIs are too small for bass for me.

Ah see when I used the Jazz IIIs they were perfect (then again I have semi-small fingers). I only started finger-picking cause I wanted to play the bassline of John Wayne Was a Nazi which wasn’t feasible with a pick.

When I play acoustic I use a pick though. I’m not a heathen.

Youtube gets worse every year but no one ever moves to new websites.
Kinda that way with all the giants isn't it? You gotta really offer something better to get people away. MySpace eventually fell and I assume it's because Facebook had so many better features. I had dial up so even though I had both, I rarely got on them. I don't know what caused the transition exactly. I'd imagine if there was a Youtube But Better site and they incited content creators to switch over, they'd be able to take down Youtube.

I really want to participate in this thread but I have become such a "sarcastic asshole" over the years that I really find it difficult to come up with things that I still like because so many of them have been ruined by incompetent writers/producers/etc.

Star Trek used to be one of my biggest passions for example.
My interested in Star Wars is limited to a handful of material such as the original trilogy and a lot of EU that came out before 1999 (centered around the Galactic Civil War and the New Republic era) with exception of KOTOR and Jedi Knight)

Okay I should stick to the topic.

Carl Bark's Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge. I can't give a damn about Disney and its other licenses but I still love Bark's stuff. It has its shares of clunkers and weak stories but many of his stories remain enjoyable up to this day and it inspired some great fan fiction (Don Rosa's stories for example, Van Horn did also do some nice stories and I probably forgot another writer/artist or two)
All these stories feel so detached from the rest of Disney that I sometimes think it should have been separate if it wasn't that Donald Duck first made up by other people.

For the rest I don't care much about things any more because of my mental state.

i'd hardly say star trek is "ruined"

its just not good right now.

but all the old shows are still there.

btw DS9 is best trek fight me.

and hell who knows maybe the new picard series will actually be good. probably not, but maybe!
