Fallout Game for a Moron

Wry

It Wandered In From the Wastes
So, if you were to recommend any Fallout game to a complete newcomer to the series, now bear in mind that this person is most likely a moron, which one would you suggest and why?

go by chronology
1,
2,
3

1: this is Fallout. plain and simple. this game is what "its all about".
2: same engine, graphics, layout etc as the above, but bigger in scope. i like 2 better, others dislike it compared to the 1st.
3: its fair enough. its much more a shooter tho, while 1 and 2 are true role-playing games.
if you like more subtlety, intelligence, and having your own intelligence respected, the original fallout games (1 and 2) are definitely the prefered ones.
if you dont like to read, and dont like to wait, but like to shoot a lot, and run a lot, then 3 is for you.

fallout tactics is roughly styled after 1 and 2 when it comes to graphics and interface, but has a tactical combat oriented story and gameplay. its fair enough, but lacks the adventurous feel of the role play game.

i havent tried fallout new vegas yet. i cry every night.

I say start them out with 3 or NV

Reason being is because 1 and 2 are as user friendly as a soup sandwich. 3 or NV has a much better chance of hooking you into the story

This is a weird question. I (and probably most people here) would recommend the first two games, regardless of intellect.

Speak for yourself, please. Fallout 2 had me hooked when I saw the intro video. The strongest reaction Fallout 3 and its story (and dialogue) managed to inspire was some serious cringing.

I will let the 145,000 hits for "Stuck Behind NPC" speak for me. Most games have the decency to actually tell you the controls, not Fallout 2

^
right click, choose "push", and the npc will move out of the way.

in fallout 1 there is a chance of getting stuck behind an npc.
it happened to me once

guess how many times ive gotten stuck on walls and furniture in fallout 3?
go ahead, guess.

I figured how to push NPC's in Fallout 2 in less than a second from the moment I got stuck...
Fallout 1? OK, if you don't play it modded, there's a chance you actually get stuck. Fallout 2? Go cry elsewhere.

Anyway, I can't consider a moron someone who actually enjoys RPG's (it means he enjoys reading a good story, to begin), so I wouldn't recommend Fallout 1 or 2 to a moron. Most likely, Fallout 3, since it involves a few less decissions than New Vegas (for example, you don't need to choose who to side), which means a simpler game for someone who just wants to shoot a few radscorpions and see power armors.

You heard it here first folks - If you are a moron, don't play Fallout.

Seriously though....Start with Fallout 1 if the person isn't a complete dumbass. If they don't like to read they should not play Fallout. If they like Fallout 1 at all then move on to Fallout 2. From there give them the choice of Tactics or Fallout 3. After that try Fallout: New Vegas to wrap it up nice.
Mention That-Which-Cannot-Be-Named, but never let them play it, unless of course you don't like the person.

If they don't like Fallout 1 or 2 then you should probably kick their ass. I know I would.

If I were a mod, this thread would end with this post.

Well, I guess it's been nice knowing you guys for a few days...!

Just kidding. There's an interesting amount of conflicting opinions on this tiny topic, but I suppose it would make more sense to play the games in chronological order. I'll see if I can get a copy of Fallout 1 that can sit on my drive for the next seven months

Maybe it seemed an odd question to ask, but I've found a few series lately that should be played backwards because the first few aren't compelling and not as well developed as later games. It's not something I would normally do, but it genuinely does seem to work with certain series.

Thanks for your input, boys and girls!

A moron can't go wrong with Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel.

Seriously just start with F1, not sure why F1 and F2 are called user-unfriendly in this thread. Just read the manual or use Google (or NMA) if you don't understand part of the interface or mechanics.

^ It's only user-unfriendly to morons and younger kids. Morons lack the higher brain functions of normal people. When they play Fallout 2 they see the dialog that low IQ characters see. Usually they will just click-click-click to skip past the boring reading parts anyway. They might make it halfway through the Temple of Trials without getting completely bored, instead choosing to go back and play (Insert newest CoD clone, or Bioware title).
I know my younger cousin (17 years old) tried to play Fallout 2 because I told him to. He said that it was alright, but the old graphics turned him off. Now he likes the other 2 Fallout games, Oblivion, and Skyrim, so I consider him a Bethesda whore. I call him that quite frequently TBH. I told him the problems with those kinds of games. He agreed with me. I think if I sit down with him, help him with the game a little, and show him the fucking awesome stuff in Fallout 1 and 2 - he would come around. The problem is a lot of modern day gamers haven't played real RPG's. They are used to a compass guiding them everywhere they go. They expect to be told exactly what to do with the quests. My cousin mentioned not knowing what to do. I told him that was the best part of the game. It doesn't hold your hand. You have to think about what you would do in that situation.

I started playing Fallout 1 and 2 when I was 12 or 13 years old, so even a younger kid may be able to get into it. Of course I got my ass handed to me a few times, but I learned from my mistakes. I beat Fallout 1 with no problems. Fallout 2 was a little rougher. The bugs kicked my ass in the early years. When I got older I was able to experience it in it's glory with the Restoration Patch (Shout out to Kilap), and I honestly don't understand why someone could not enjoy the game nowadays. With all the awesome mods and stuff for the old Fallout game I can only ask this:

How can you NOT like the original Fallout games? I know some didn't like Fallout 2, but I loved it. Everyone aroud here agrees that the original was badass though.

Now my cousin is 17, so I forgive him for being a kid. If you are over 20 years old you have no fucking excuse. Furthermore, if someone doesn't like Fallout they should never come to NMA. I want to go on the record and say if anyone on these forums doesn't like Fallout....GTFO. NOW!

I always know whether or not to recommend Fallout to someone. One of my old army friends said to me one time, "Is that one of those games where you have to read a lot?"....

I know automatically not to recommend Fallout to him. I speak about it in passing, but when he asks, I simply mention that it is a RPG, and he doesn't like games like that. Of course it is possible to "Convert" Bethesda and Bioware fanboys into "True" Fallout fans. It usually involves forcibly inserting alcohol down their mouths until they can't run away. Then you force them to watch you play it for several hours. If they don't like the game after that, like I said earlier, take them out back and kick their ass. Then tell them you don't want to be their friend anymore. Simple as that. /End rant

You should play Fallout 1, and Fallout 1, then Fallout 1. If you can only choose one to start the series, then choose Fallout 1. :D

Seriously, you should start with the original game to learn where the series came from. Relative to the other games, it's also the shortest. The devs have gone on record saying they wished that they had made the original Fallout a bigger game. I don't think that would have helped that much, since the story is great as it is.

If you have trouble finding a hard copy (disc) of the Fallout 1, I would recommend getting it from Steam. If you ever get around to playing New Vegas, you're going to have to open a Steam account anyway. They sell the original Fallout for $9.99.

It's not that hard to press F1 or read the manual.

Yeah, the instruction manual is pretty good for learning shit like that.

Kids nowadays  , too much Facebook - my nephew, nice kid but not the smartest, was playing Fallout 2 and basically skipping all of the text (reading is hard - I need moving pictures), and complained he didn't know where to go blah, blah. Just to make me more ashamed of him I noticed his character had pretty high numbers in all his skills, yep he was playing the game on the easiest setting. "But it's too hard otherwise". I've put him up for adoption, just don't tell his mum. :look:

So moron, maybe move on - Fallout 1 and 2 doesn't like morons, or just read the manuals. What ever you do, don't even think about Hearts of Iron.

this reminds me of some years back, i shared apartment with my brother and some of his friends, including a super hyperactive lad who was SO excited i played fallout 2 (the fallout 3 hype didnt exist, so i was very surprised he knew about it)
he asked me if i played "diablo", and i said "nnnoooooo?"
and he uttered: "man! if you love fallout, your REALLY gonna love diablo!"
i was sceptical

we swapped install cd's
i installed diablo, and was nearly dying of adrenaline overdoses "WTF IS THIS SHIT :0" *kill kill kill kill kill kill kill* i quit, went into the livingroom, to find him with an equally puzzled expression in his face.
apparently he was in combat with all of klamath.
"why... "
because he entered dialogue with the dog (the one you give beef jerky) but didnt read any of the dialogue. instead he had quickly fast-clicked through it, obviously clicked through where you deliberately provoke the dog into attacking you.

he agreed that he had a totally warped memory of "fallout"
