More Fallout 3 Concept Art

See... I don't buy that.
Think about it:

- Bethesda release the first concept art, generic wasteland.
- Fans say: "We want to see ruins!"
- Bethesda release second concept art, generic ruins.
- Fans say: "We want to see less generic ruins!"
- Bethesda release third concept art, less generic ruins.
- Fans say: "Good, but we want to see Fallouty ruins!"
- Bethesda will hopefully release a pic that shows more Fallouty

.

I didn't see the fans saying that at all.

If they were listening to the fans, they would have released close up shots rather than only distance shots, since that's probably been the biggest complaint the fans have had about the concept art.

In addition, the devs were asked what their favorite concept art was and one of them said that it hadn't been released yet, which just shows that they are using already created pieces, rather than pieces that were created on the fly.

i don't think you can do a better one,

And because of that I wouldn't be allowed to criticize? I'm pretty sure there is a name for this fallacy, although I can't remember it now.

Either way:

Am I allowed to criticize now?

and do not think that because its a matte painting is less valuable as an art piece

For me it is. I'd always appreciate more those who create everything by themselves, than those who just mix stuff made by others.

FTR, if you think that anything that any concept that contains a photo is a cheap piece you are very VERY wrong

I most certainly don't think that, as I've seen some amazing stuff done this way. However, in this case, the requirements for me to consider it "amazing" are much higher.
That said, Mullins doesn't impress me at all, whether his pictures are photo-manipulations or matte-paintings.

And anyway, my grudge was with calling photo-manipulation painting and with all those kiddies with Photoshop that call themselves artists. See deviantart.com for a nice collection of such apologists.

Somebody remember what Rosh said?

"If you liked F:POS and think Oblivion is TEH GRATEST THING EVAR, then Fallout 3 is the game for you. Same lack of attention to setting, story, background elements, why the game was made the way it was, that we've dealt with since Chuck Cuevas. Instead of being a P&P-styled CRPG, you can fully expect Morrowind with Guns, and even though Googie doesn't fit the setting quite right (was more "art deco in ruins"), F:POS' use of Googie was described to me as "... would be better than some of the concept art and assets already created for Fallout 3". Much of the shit simply doesn't fit, including some cheap scratch marks and rust brushing akin to FOT, and some stuff that better belongs in Blade Runner. Which was good, but is by no means near Fallout."

Need I say more?
And the author of this picture has a problem with proportions. that carrier is three times bigger than it should be. maybe he was over zealous in his wish to inoculate that '50s feel with that obnoxious carrier. or MAYBE the carrier is a picture insertion that couldn't be zoomed out?

Fallout 3 will be/have anything/everything but Fallouts spirit.

PS: I miss Roshombo.

Unless he secretly works at Bethesda that's as much of an assumption as anything else said.
Sure, to a cynic like me it's believable but by no means certain.

"use of Googie was described to me as /except from what I saw and was told"

so I guess is not necessary to work for Beth$ to make this statement

anyway, with this artwork we have seen for the past weeks sure puts truth on his words.

Yeah, because this artwork is totally worse than the artwork done for FOBOS!
Are you kidding me?

One thing than can be said about the art we've seen so far is that they are pretty scetchy. You can almost see his strokes. Either this means that he made them for the devs to get into the mood, or it is his style. Checking his site shows that he have done similar things before, therefore one of his styles we can presume.

The next thing I wonder is for what intention he painted them. Was it to give the devs ideas or was it for commercial use (like putted on the site. We know Bethesda has the money to pay for paintings to be used exclusively on some site if they wished to). If the intention was to show them to the public, the bar for letting it pass for a high quality product rises. Even though the level of detail in these pictures are quite remarkable they do look a little like speed paintings. But if he painted these for inhouse use and then the pr department later got hold of them we shouldn't blame him. They are pretty darn well done.

And by the way, I don't think painters can spend several weeks on a single concept painting. They need to eat too y'know.
