The Game

Oh man, while all these former designers are here, why don't we have a recap of the story that was supposed to be in the game... pleeeaase??? :)

(so i can feel even worse that its not coming out- but seriously, I'm really interested in how the Fallout saga was going to play out)

J. E. I just want to say. damn good work... I just wish Interplay had had the common sense to see it through to the end.

your on my list of hero's man.

I also want to say a big thank you to you guys for all the work and love you put into this project. I know that you guys were just as big fans of the series as we were, and would have made the game great as well as staying true to the originals. I hope the gaming industry can still recognize you for this fine work even if it is never released...

I would really like to know why the canceled the game. I know that they want to put all there resources into the consol market. You think they could have just finnished this game, and made some retun on it. They have already wasted anough money on canceling three games ( Fo3 and Jefferson, Torn ) did I get that right? I think FO3 would have had a chance to make some money. It may have not been a Huge succsess, but more so then Fallout - BOS will probably be.

Why dont they relize that you cannot just slap a lable onto somehting and think it will sell just because of the name. Yes Fallout is well known, but probably mostly by the Computer Gamer market. And yes there is some overlap of the two types of consumers, but Im thinking mostly older people, not thoes between 10 - 18. Fallout was relased in 97, FO2 in 98, most people who might possible play BOS probably have not played FO1/2 because that game is (at leat what I think) being targeted at a younger group 14 - 18 maybe? My point is, the two markets are different. The name is probably going to have very little effect on the buying habits of the people who may purchase this game (BOS). The types of games are so different RPG vs Kill stuff?? I would think gamers who are interested in mindlessly shooting things, do not have as much interest in serious RPG games. ( I do, but I was introduced to both types of games at the same time, I will not play BOS however )

If they want to make money off of names alone, go get the rights to a movie name. Look at the Matrix, it was spose to be an awful game, but sold tons! ( didn't interplay sell of that game )

I guess im just rammbeling, im just pissed!

Why the hell are they making that shity POS game! It will probably make money though, I bet they didn't spend too much on it. In the end they will try and pump out low cost shity games untill they go under!

They should change there logo to
By Assholes for Profit!

Well back to studying Economics lol.

TOEE doesn't look too bad. Was it all 3D or just the people?

TOEE had pre-rendered backgrounds, only the characters were 3D.

It's really killing me that there's so much interest being shown in this game now that it's canceled - maybe if Iplay had some inkling they would've canned that shit game instead of this one. Then again, they are morons, so probably not.

Here's a picture that should see more use. Lodin from the Something Awful forums made it:

hahahahahahahaha
great picture

i agree, though: i would REALLY like to know a basic story line. Not a whole story, mind you, just like what would normally be given to preview a game. I guess i don't want to know the whole story in case the game actually goes back into production. But anything would be great!

The thing is, Interplay has not announced anything official yet... they're probably thinking things over eh? I hope their rethinking their strategy, or at least realize that they should just finish Fallout 3 as the last PC game and end things in a nice way...for the fans...

I just don't want to accept what's happening until Interplay announces officially that Fallout 3 is scrapped.

I'm praying...

I understand your pain, but since FO3 was barely 50% finished and several BIS members have confirmed the firings I'm sure the "thinking things over" phase is long gone.

A lot of people asked me why I left Black Isle. This is a small indication. The things you see in those screenshots might not please everyone, but they seem to please a lot of people... even die-hard Fallout fans. I was pretty confident this would be the reaction.

In the past year, it has been made very clear to me that the amount of passion you devote towards something -- whether it is a person or a creation -- has very little bearing on whether or not that devotion will bear rewarding fruit. Because ultimately, some of the people who have control over your fate just don't give a damn.

Take out all of the questions of right and wrong. Remove concerns about who should be assigned blame, and how much. It is very hard to devote yourself to someone or something when you have good reason to believe that the object of your devotion is going to be taken away or is otherwise unattainable. It's happened enough to me recently that I lost faith. I couldn't devote any more of myself to something that I believed was doomed.

Someone told me that they never knew anyone who resigned from their job and regretted it. I regretted it the minute I walked out the door. Maybe the game would have sucked. Our design ideas might have been crappy and the weapon balance might have been horrible and the story could have come across as lame... but it really was the game that so many of us had wanted to make for so long.

I'm too sad to be angry. So many of my friends losing their jobs, and so much passion wasted. Some people never recover from disappointment like that. I don't care about whose fault it is anymore, or if it's anyone's fault. It may be a small, stupid, trivial, worthless tragedy, but it is mine to weigh and measure.

It really is a tragedy. Their wasnt many games I looked forward too but I could always count on Black Isle to make a good game. They were the only division in Interplay that was worth anything. Why they would keep a team that made Run Like Hell instead of a team that made Award winning games is beyond me. I have never kept up with any person that made video games before but after this I went to see who was part of these projects and Im keeping tabs on theri future projects because Im sure their going to be amazing. At least we have Wasteland from Fargo to look forward to.

argh! im just so blank right now...

i keep refreshing this forums page and the NMA main page just
to see if there's any updates and new posts...

j.e. all of us here just played the game and never made them... but we have so much passion for this game just like everyone else in Black Isle....

I commend everyone at Black Isle for their devotion and passion for sticking as long as they could for Fallout...

Josh, the way you put it shows that your bosses were so out of touch that they didn't even give this project a chance from the start. For me, an outsider, it's just utterly mind boggling that these goons would have such little respect for the Fallout franchise and what it has meant for the gaming industry. I would say that Fallout singlehandedly revived the CRPG industry. W/O Fallout, there would have been no Knights of the Old Republic, no NWN, no Baldur's Gate.

It is not a trivial tragedy as you say- as you can see from the community's reaction and even the gaming media, this was something an incredible amount of people were looking forward to and following. And they crushed all of their dreams as well as yours. And I know that it must be so many times worse for you and everyone whose been on the team, but I hope you keep your head up and continue to approach your work with the same passion and honesty that you always have. There are still many people out there who respect what you have done.

BTW, I love your avatar. The S4 is my dreamcar too. That or the RS6...

I really hope you and the rest of the BIS team do eventually recover from it. As much as a lot of us here argued over your ideas, I don't think any of us doubted that you're a very intelligent and talented guy, and I'd really like to see you and the rest of the guys continue making games.

is it at all possible to retain the work and time invested into what could have been an all time favorite and once again award winning game?

i don't know anything about the copyright laws or license deals, but i have heard other companies are interested in taking up the fallout title, silver-style being one of them... is it possible to take the work done at BIS with you since its no longer in production? the time and effort put into FO3 just being thrown out is a ridiculous thought....... is there no hope?

fallout fans are obviously still behind you guys 100% even now, a 30,000 signature list is proof enough for that i would think. fans will help in whatever way they can, even if its just signing a petition. i think what our support really means is: DON'T GIVE UP!!!

even if it takes years, FO fans are still there  :D

Fallout is the RPG'ers holy grail.

Fallout fans are he single-mindedly most loyal fans i've ever seen and i'm sure that we're all willing to do damn near anything short of murder (and a few of us wouldnt stop at that even) to make sure fallout 3 was completed.

to J. E. Sawyer, Fergus, and everyone who made up BIS, we love you guys, we may have given you flack over various things (Fallout Tactics: brotherhood of steel, comes to mind) But in the end, you guys are our gods. And to see you lose all the blood, sweat, time and tears you've put into Fallout 3, what shows at least to me, to have been one of the, or even THE best CRPG of all time... I truly am sorry.

If theres any way in witch he fallout fans can help you all out right now, I assure you, you need only ask and we'll be there.
