Which mods/patches for Fallout 1&2?

Use the newest ddraw.dll and then copy the lines from the newest ddraw.ini that are not present in the RP ddraw.ini to that one.

This way you'll have the latest sfall with the settings needed for the RP.

Hope that helps.

Is RP the Restoration Project mod? I'm not using that one, just Killap's Update Patch.

I just used the two files from the newest Sfall version and I haven't had any errors yet.

The only "problem" I've had is that if I am traveling on the world map where the cursor is an arrow and I go into a random encounter, the cursor will still be the arrow instead of the combat or movement cursor. This is easily fixed by pulling up and closing a menu, for example pressing "ESC" twice.

Sorry, thought you were using the RP.

I don't think you need to make any changes to the .ini if you are using the Unofficial Patch so you should not have any problems the way you did it

Yet Another 'Which Mods' Thread

Okay, so I've pored over the forum here and read the stickies and whatnot, and I'm a bit confused still about which mod does what. Hopefully someone can help me get this cleared up.

I'm replaying Fallout and Fallout 2, and possibly purchasing and playing Fallout 3 after (giving Tactics a miss, I never really liked that one). I originally played both games au naturel, if you will, but have decided that this time around I want to play Fallout 'as it should have been.' I'm not looking to add any extra content, just to make what's there work the way it should.

I understand that sfall mod fixes the issue with sharpshooter. I also found a mod that says it corrects AP ammo (which, as we all know, is borked and useless in the original game) but it doesn't say what changes it makes to do that. Does anybody know?

I'm also thinking about using the NPC mod to see if it'll make Ian any less useless. And of course, bug fixes are good, too.

Anybody got any suggestions on what mods I should be using, and what order I should install them in? Anything I'm missing?

I'm no expert, but these are the mods and patches I used (a few days ago and had no problems with) and the order I applied them,

Fallout 1:
-Official Fallout Patch (came with my GOG.com setup.exe)
-Team X's Unofficial Fallout patch v1.2
-Team X's Unofficial Fallout patch v1.3.4
-Sfall v1.18e
-High Resolution Patch v2.1 (must be done last I think)

Fallout 2:
-Official Fallout 2 Patch (came with my GOG.com setup.exe)
-Killap's Unofficial Fallout 2 patch v1.02.25 (manual install)
-Sfall v1.44c (replaces ddraw.ini and ddraw.dll from Killap's Patch)
-High Resolution Patch v2.1
-Delete patch000.dat in the Fallout 2 directory (part of Killap's installation method

For both of these versions, the changes that these patches / mods accomplished was to apply fixes, add some interface tweaks (scrolling and middle mouse button from Sfall I think), and to add higher resolution (which I set to my monitor resolution). None of the content is really changed from the original games I think and so problems like the AP ammo are still in my game.

I did not edit any text files etc and it was all fairly simple. I extracted each patch to a folder then ran the High Resolution Patch Exe and then copied that folders contents to my game directory.

One note is that with the resolution patch, if you Alt-Tab, be sure to minimize all other windows first before you go back to the game. If you get a black screen with only the character and mouse drawn, this is why. It can be easily fixed by pulling up and exiting the menu (which redraws the screen).

Thanks for the tips. I've installed those patches, along with the NPC mod. I'm still toying with installing the ammo patch, but I'm hesitant to put it in until I figure out what it does. I've read a few things regarding AP ammo, and the info I've found seems to be a bit conflicted:

- It doesn't do anything due to an engine bug
- It does affect DR and damage, but the numbers are wrong so it's always worse than JHP (what I thought before looking at all of this)
- It can/can't be fixed

Can anyone clarify the situation for me here?

EDIT - It should be noted that, for the moment at least I'm just looking at the original Fallout. I'm going to play through that first, and then tackle Fallout 2.

Fallout1

That's Fallout2

For F2, it's more then numbers are wrong. Exempt DR mod, damage multiplier is also stat that helps in penetrating DT. And having it low (like in AP bullets) makes ammo pretty useless against armor.

On the other hand, if you push multiplier high, then you get ammo that is good against both armored and unarmored, making JHP bullets useless.

Hi, first time poster.

I've got the GOG.com version of FO1 with the following mods (installed in the following order):

  • TeamX 1.2
  • TeamX 1.3.4
  • Fallout NPC Mod 3.4 (TeamX)
  • Fallout Revisited
  • Fallout HiRes Patch

Fallout seems to crash right after I receive the 1000 EXP for saving Sinthia from the Raider at the Junktown Inn. I'll be testing to see if one of the mods (I'm sort of suspecting Revisited) is causing it, but I don't think Revisited tampers with that part.

If anyone could confirm or deny my suspicion, that'd be great.

Thanks.

Never mind! A little looking around and I realized that TeamX has 1.3.5 out. NMA has 3.4, so. I downloaded the new TeamX stuff from their website.

My new setup (if anyone is curious) is:
  • TeamX 1.2.1 English RC
  • TeamX 3.5
  • TeamX NPC Mod 3.5 w/ no armor patch
I'll be adding on the Hi Res patch too. But I did get through without crashing with those three patches.

Fallout and Fallout 2 Nostalgia help

My son recently bought Fallout 3 for the Xbox and started playing it without any idea it was based on a *gasp* computer game.

After watching him play for awhile I was a little saddened to see the game I loved as a teenager had developed into what appeared to be nothing more than a FPS.

So, I went to Walmart and bought the Fallout Trilogy containing; Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics. To show him what a great game it originally was.

But when I loaded it and began playing it's limited to the size of a postcard on my screen. Of course the computer I'm using now is quite a bit more advanced than the one I had circa 1997.

With a bit of googling I found this promising site. I may give this addon a try http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=1085 but it's listed under Fallout2 and not sure if it's useable for Fallout 1 or not, perhaps http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=1266 would be better but then would it work on fallout 2 or will separate programs be required?

I'm posting now because after seeing the plethora of available patches, mods, and addons available I'm a bit lost in the sheer selection of choices.

I hate to play the original game through to stumble across constant bugs and the like, but I don't want to distort the true game with unnecessary mods, at least not the first time through.

So, any suggestions on basic downloads would be greatly appreciated. Naturally I want to fix the various bugs and other issues contained in the original games, including any latest official patches that may be available. I also want to play in full screen on my 24 inch monitor with as much resolution as can be eeked out of the game.

Any help in showing my son what a great game Fallout and Fallout 2 originally were is greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure that if you've bought the newly released Trilogy pack, there should be patches available on the disk. Some of the fan patches could be outdated now though.
Try checking which versions you have installed by looking in the lower-right corner of the main menu.
I recommend sticking to the official patches (1.2 for both games) for first-time/first-time-in-a-long-while playthroughs.

The resolution problem might have to do with your video drivers. Try opening your video driver configuration utility or whatever and check for some sort of scaling configuration.
Since you getting the tiny-in-the-middle-of-screen deal it'll most likely be set to "No scaling". Set it to something like "Scale with correct aspect ratio" and good times *should* roll.

Otherwise you could try these two:
http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=1266
http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=1267
But I don't think the UI scales with resolution, so you might need binoculars and/or a magnifying glass to read the text in 1920*1200.

Those helped a lot PlanHex. Thanks.

Now I just need to stop getting my ass kicked. I don't remember this game being so hard. With Good perception and agility and small gun perk I still can't hit a rad scorpion unless it's standing in my face. Two steps away from me and my chance to hit is like 47%.

Though I'd play an intellectual character, speech, science, intelligence etc but looks like you need a lot of str/end/martial skills in a post apocalyptic world.

@PlanHex: I see this sentiment echoed throughout these forums, and I don't quiet understand it. Why shouldn't "new" players use the wonderful bug-fix only patches made by Team X and Killap? I'd understand this standpoint if these patches were new and untested, but I think it's safe to say that they've proven to be very reliable--they remove bugs from the original game, without adding in any extra bullshit. That's exactly what the original poster asked for, so why not recommended them to him? I just find it strange that so many posters here share this mentality, and I don't see the logic behind it.

@Grimknot: If you want patches that do nothing but bug-fixes, I highly recommend using the following patches:
Fallout 1: Team X bug fix patch for Fallout 1: Unofficial Fallout1 patch, v1.3.5 and it's english readme.
Fallout 2: 1.02+ patch by killap

Dravean that is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.

Now the question is can I apply those bug fix patches to my game in progress or do I need to start a whole new game. Hate to start over if it's unnecessary.

I believe that you can. But I'm not a 100% certain. Wasteland Ghost would know better than I.

You could always back up your saves, then try it out.

Yeah

Drevan, I could not possibly agree more with you. It's really bizarre.

If I am not mistaken, you're gonna have to go with fresh starts for full certainty, I'm afraid.

You must start a new game. In fact, if you install those patches, your old saves will become incompatible and you never be able to load them.
